Tamborine National Park is located on the plateau of the Tamborine Mountain and is an area of about 11,60 square km in Queensland about 45km south of the city of Brisbane.
The plateau that the park sits on is about 5km wide and 8km long with a high altitude of 525 metres. Due to the high elevation of the plateau the park is cool in the summer compared to neighbouring areas but summer is also the rainy season making it difficult to plan a visit.
The Tamborine National Park is made up of many attractions such as rainforest areas, open forest, gorges, waterfalls, cliffs, lookouts, and woodlands.
One of the main tourist attractions of the Tamborine National Park is Witches Falls which is found on the eastern side of the park. Here visitors can take the Witches Falls Circuit Trail which is about 3km long and gradually snakes through a steep slope into a rainforest that is filled with palm groves, lagoons, and cycad groves. At the end of the trail are the falls that give the region their name.
Another attraction on the eastern side of the park is the Palm Grove section that contains rainforest lands, as well as fig and palm groves. There are several trails and driving routes that can take tourists through the groves with the driving routes located along Curtis Road and Palm Grove Avenue.
For those who like to browse through flowers and learn about the biodiversity of the flora in the area, the MacDonald Park is located off of Wangawallan Road and has a trail that is 2.6 km long. Throughout the trail all of the plants are named with placards to help people identify each species.
Those hoping to catch a glimpse of wildlife may want to head to the Joalah section of the park where the Cutis Falls Walk begins. The trail is about 1.5km long and offers access to a rock pool located at the bottom of Witches Falls and at times brush turkeys can be observed.
For a good lookout location that offers a full view of the entire Tamborine National Park head on over to Niche’s Corner which is located central to the mountain range. Here you can look out over the Gold Coast or take the Niche’s Lookout Circuit trail which is about 3.2km long. Along the trail you can see rock pools, plant communities, rainforests, and several cascades as well as lookout over the beauty of the entire park from an eagle’s point of view.
